In years past, the women’s soccer team has done a team-building event that coincides with long road trips.
Despite the eight hour bus drive to play against Villanova earlier this week, the team didn’t partake in anything as it had done in years past, like the time it went to West Virginia and did white water rafting.
This year’s team-building event was held on campus, as coach Laura Kerrigan coordinated a team scavenger hunt to bring together her group of players before the upcoming year.
Jessica O’Rourke, one of three upperclassmen on the team, said there were four teams of four to five players each with the freshmen and sophomores spread out evenly.
Armed with a camera, the teams had to take a picture with a few things on campus and the surrounding area that were in the list of things to get.
“Our coaches gave us a list of more of the historical places around campus, and we had to get a picture and got the freshmen oriented with the places on campus,” O’Rourke said. “They gave us a list [including] the Bell Tower, Pullen Park Train that we had to go get our picture taken with.”
It was more low-key than the year they went to West Virginia, and O’Rourke did acknowledge that the trip to West Virginia was probably more fun, but this activity had its perks too.
“It was good to get together and show them the campus a little bit,” O’Rourke said.
Kerrigan echoed O’Rourke’s sentiments that it was still a fun get-together for the players.
“They had a lot of fun, they came in laughing … and the pictures that they had were pretty funny,” Kerrigan said. “They had a picture with a cow when they were at the vet school.”
Places on the list included the Capitol building, Centennial campus and the windows at local eateries Char-Grill and Cook Out.
“We wanted to make sure they knew about different things on campus like the Court of [North Carolina],” Kerrigan said. “We put the basement of the library in there and a lot of the different buildings on campus.”
“Also, we did a little bit about the surrounding area of the University, so we have a little Pullen Park Train on there. We have a Lake Johnson boat house — the biggest purpose was to get them out in groups and have a good time with it.”
With Chantalle Dugas falling into the water last year, Kerrigan made sure everybody was safe for this year’s activity.
“They would be disqualified if they got a parking ticket or a speeding ticket, so they couldn’t disobey the laws during the contest,” Kerrigan said.
When O’Rourke’s team tied one that included Dugas, the tiebreaker was done in the Free Expression Tunnel, and the team with the best drawing won.
Using something women’s basketball coach Kay Yow had told them, Dugas’ team wrote “total commitment” in the tunnel and beat O’Rourke’s team in the tiebreaker.
