A man was shot during an attempted robbery early Wednesday morning just south of the University’s campus.
According to a Baton Rouge Police Department news release, the victim was walking down the sidewalk of the 200 block of East Boyd Dr. around 1:45 a.m., when a man approached him demanding his wallet. When the victim refused, the suspect shot him once in his left arm and once in the behind.
The suspect then fled the scene on foot.
Baton Rouge Emergency Medical Service confirmed someone was transported to a local hospital in response to a call from East Boyd Drive on Wednesday morning.
BRPD spokesman Cpl. L’Jean Mckneely said he did not know where the victim was coming from or where he was going when the man accosted him.
Mckneely said the victim’s condition was stable. It is unknown if the victim is a student.
The crime took place within walking distance of campus between Swire and Dodson Avenues.
Benjamin Eckel, a computer science student who lives on East Boyd, said he thought he heard a gunshot around the time of the shooting.
“I dismissed it because I didn’t see a reason why anyone would be shooting in this area on a Tuesday night,” he said.
