BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Louisiana has more people behind bars, on a per capita basis, than any other state.
That’s according to research released Monday by the Pew Center for the States.
The Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit argues in the report that Louisiana and other states should focus more on community programs and less on traditional prisons. The group says such an approach would save money, reduce the number of repeat offenders and ease former prisoners’ transition back into society.
