Three people from the “Faithful Soldier School of Evangelism” were kicked out of the Quad around noon today when their preaching grew too loud and disturbed surrounding classes.Because the Quad is not a public forum like Free Speech Plaza where the rest of their organization was gathered, the evangelists were asked to leave and return toward the Student Union.Joe Rhodes, a public speaking doctoral student, was the first to tell them they did not have permission to speak in the Quad.During a short argument with Rhodes, Caleb Green, one of the evangelists, said they had the right to speak on campus because the University uses taxpayer dollars to fund its classes. Though campus security was already on their way, Rhodes compromised with the preachers by agreeing to let them speak in his class rather than in the Quad.”When you come into an academic setting, there may be Christians involved, but this is a place for logic and reasoning,” Rhodes said. “They violate those principles.”Rhodes said he was going to allow them to speak in his class to help demonstrate what was and what was not effective public speaking.”I’m not intentionally pushing people away with my message,” Green said. “If someone is shoved away, its because my message steps on their toes and keeps people from living their lifestyle.”Rhodes said the “Faithful Soldier School of Evangelism” should take a lesson from “Mr. Jesus Talk,” a preacher who sits quietly in front of the Union and talks reasonably to students.”I don’t know about the credibility of a new group that comes from nowhere,” said Ivan Imes, better known to students as Mr. Jesus Talk. “It’s not my place to judge, though. For all I know there is one person on campus today who will find the Lord through them.”The rest of the evangelists from the “Faithful Soldier School of Evangelism” were congregated in front of the Union. The group petitioned students by handing out fliers, waving banners painted with a portrait of Jesus on the cross and playing music on a guitar accompanied by a song about chastity.——Contact Adam Duvernay at [email protected]
