BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Louisiana lawmakers are pushing an overhaul of the state’s civil service system.
The proposals, spearheaded by Rep. Mike Danahay of Sulphur, would do away with some job protections offered to longtime government employees and get rid of near-automatic pay increases that 60,000 state workers get each year.
The idea started with a group of freshmen state lawmakers, and now Gov. Bobby Jindal is on board, calling the changes a way to reward performance.
The head of the civil service office says she supports many of the changes — except the reworking of the annual pay increase system.
Lawmakers in the upcoming legislative session will consider a resolution suggesting how the civil service system should be revamped. The ideas will have to go before the state Civil Service Commission.
