Students in the S.O.S. – Save Our Schools campaign will hand deliver plastic Easter eggs to Gov. Bobby Jindal’s office at noon today to show their disappointment in the governor’s decision to use $50 million in state funds for a chicken processing plant, rather than use the funds for higher education.
“After twelve years of supporting higher education, we had faith that Governor Jindal would do his best to save higher education,” said Megan Fambrough, S.O.S. spokeswoman. “But after hearing about this $50 million investment, I realize that his priorities are way off.”
Students will bring Easter eggs and baskets stuffed with messages for the governor, according to an S.O.S. news release.
“We hope that delivering these eggs will say, ‘We think the governor has laid an egg. We care about our education, and we expect more from our government,'” Whitney Breaux, S.O.S. campaign member, said. “I want to see higher education receive the same kind of support that this chicken plant received.”
The S.O.S. – Save Our Schools campaign is an ongoing class project for a political communication course at the University.
Students involved have created a blog and held press conferences, calling on the governor and state Legislature to re-evaluate their budget priorities.
Jindal’s proposed state spending budget has higher education taking a $219 million reduction for the fiscal year beginning July 1, on top of the now permanent $55 million mid-year cut, to help make up for slacking state revenue.
