BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — The state’s top tax collector says Louisiana is owed $472 million in delinquent taxes.
Revenue Secretary Cynthia Bridges told lawmakers the figure Thursday during a budget hearing.
Gov. Bobby Jindal is proposing a tax amnesty period to try to collect some of the money. It would relieve delinquent taxpayers of some penalties and interest if they pay what they owe.
The details of the amnesty would have to be worked out by lawmakers, if they agree, in the legislative session that begins April 27.
If approved, Louisiana would become the latest in a string of states that have turned to a tax amnesty to raise cash in a time of budget troubles.—-Contact The Daily Reveille news staff at [email protected]
