BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — A planned merger of the state-run schools for blind and deaf students is estimated to save the state nearly $3 million next year.
Lawmakers were told of the estimate Wednesday as they continued to review Gov. Bobby Jindal’s budget recommendations for the year that begins July 1.
The idea of merging the Louisiana School for the Visually Impaired and the Louisiana School for the Deaf has been suggested in past years, but was scrapped by lawmakers who said the students had different needs and shouldn’t be housed on the same campus.
But lawmakers on the House Appropriations Committee say they are receptive to the idea.
Education officials say they would keep the two schools run separately but house them both on the campus where the school for the deaf now operates.
