Just like spring football, spring volleyball is a time for LSU to try out players at different positions. In the LSU Spring Tournament, the Tigers tried all types of unconventional lineups, including senior Brittnee Cooper in the back row and former Tiger libero Elena Martinez up front at outside hitter. Some of the changes seemed to work throughout the tournament, as the Tigers got victories in three of their four morning sets.LSU coach Fran Flory said despite the lack of depth for the Tigers, she was happy with some specific aspects of the day.”We did a lot of really good individual stuff [Saturday],”she said. “[Junior setter] Brittney Johnson did a great job handling the setting all day.”The Tigers swept Southern in their first match, 25-4, 25-14.Martinez had two blocks in the match at outside hitter.LSU junior Tania Schatow injured her right ankle in the second set against Southern and sat out the rest of the day.The Tigers split their two sets against Tulane, taking the first, 29-27, before falling, 17-25, in the second. The first set against Tulane was highlighted by Cooper, normally a middle blocker, getting the Tigers back into the match with a 5-0 run while she was serving. She also had two digs during that run.In the afternoon matches, the Tigers swept both Southern Mississippi, 25-23, 25-18, and Southeastern Louisiana, 25-21, 25-19.”We probably didn’t get as much progress blocking overall as I would have liked, but it was still a good spring,” Flory said.
