The Tigers will have to go through the losers’ side of the Southeastern Conference tournament bracket to defend their crown after falling to No. 8 seed Vanderbilt, 4-1, on Wednesday night in Hoover, Ala.With the loss, all three top seeds in the tournament have gone down, as both No. 2 Florida and No. 3 Ole Miss lost earlier in the day. Also, the Tigers will not sweep their way through the tournament again this season, as they did last season.No. 8 Vanderbilt (32-24, 13-17) was led by a six-hit complete game from southpaw Mike Minor.Minor dominated the No.1 Tigers (41-16, 20-11) from start to finish, retiring the final eight batters he faced while reaching 91 mph on the radar gun in the ninth inning. The southpaw struck out five Tigers in the game and got LSU to ground into three double plays.Sophomore Austin Ross got the start on the mound for the Tigers after pitching only two innings against Mississippi State on Saturday because of a two-hour rain delay. The Shreveport native went six-plus innings, allowing eight hits and four earned runs while striking out and walking four. The Tigers got three innings of scoreless relief from sophomores Daniel Bradshaw and Chad Jones and junior Paul Bertuccini after Ross left in the seventh inning with two on and no outs. The trio gave up only one hit while striking out two.Vanderbilt catcher Andrew Giobbi started the scoring by hitting his fifth home run of the season, a solo shot over the left field fence, to put the Commodores up in the fourth inning, 1-0.The Commodores got another run in the fifth on a bases loaded sacrifice fly by first baseman Curt Casali to further their lead, 2-0.Vandy added two more runs in the seventh. Although both runs were credited to Ross, sophomore Daniel Bradshaw gave up the runs.An RBI double by Casali started the scoring, and designated hitter Aaron Westlake added another with a sacrifice fly, putting the Commodores up, 4-0.The Tigers got their first and only run of the night in the seventh on a groundout by freshman shortstop Austin Nola to score freshman third baseman Tyler Hanover, who had doubled earlier in the inning.LSU will now play the loser of the game between No. 4 Alabama and No. 5 South Carolina in an elimination game at 1:30 p.m. Thursday.Sophomore Anthony Ranaudo will get the start on the mound for the Tigers.—-Contact Andy Schwehm at [email protected]
