The LSU AgCenter is developing a new Web site called the LouisianaMarket Maker which will facilitate buying and selling of locallyproduced crops and seafood.
The site, which is expected to launch in the spring, will allowLouisiana farmers and fishermen to be connected with buyers fromacross the nation and make transactions of their goods, said PaulCoreil, vice chancellor of the AgCenter’s extension service.
“I call it an online farmer’s market,” Coreil said. “Farmer’s marketsare wonderful and do a great job, but in many cases there are only oneor two vendors there for a certain product. This gives you a muchlarger audience.”
The AgCenter is buying the system for the site, including software anddata, from the University of Illinois, which spearheaded the program.
The $53,000 cost will be covered by a grant from the LouisianaRecovery Authority, Coreil said.
