BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Gov. Bobby Jindal’s administration is defending a $101 million upgrade to state government computer systems against arguments from Treasurer John Kennedy, who says the project should be stopped.
Louisiana’s Chief Information Officer, Ed Driesse, who works for the governor, says nearly $50 million has been spent on the project. He told an advisory panel to the Commission on Streamlining Government that it would be “crazy” to abandon the upgrade now.
Driesse said Tuesday the upgrade will help avoid computer crashes and save the state millions of dollars on unnecessary duplication of work, employees and maintenance.
Kennedy, a member of the streamlining commission, argues the computer project is too costly. His office has refused to participate in it.
