Intramural 3-on-3 basketball completed its playoffs on Tuesday night, while rain played spoiler for soccer once again, pushing the beginning of soccer playoffs to Wednesday night. In the men, women and co-rec 11-a-side soccer leagues, playoffs were supposed to begin Monday night, but a rainy Monday and Tuesday pushed it back.Matt Boyer, assistant director of leagues and tournaments said all teams made the playoffs this year, regardless of record, but played the same amount of games as last year. “It used to be you were scheduled for four games, and only the top half made playoffs,” Boyer said. “Now you play three games in the regular season and your fourth game is in the playoffs”Boyer said there is no additional strain on the staff despite having more weeks in the playoffs, because only half the teams remain after four weeks, the same amount of teams as last year. Boyer said University Recreation had problems last year with teams forfeiting games in the third and fourth weeks of the season after they realized they wouldn’t make the playoffs.”We’re trying to ease that issue,” Boyer said.Todd Smith, graduate assistant in charge of leagues and tournaments said the new playoff system worked by sending teams that won two games to the top playoff bracket, and the teams that didn’t to the bottom playoff bracket.Boyer said the atmosphere changes during playoff season because the loser goes home.”I would say the soccer atmosphere definitely picks up,” Smith said.Despite the added intensity, Boyer said there haven’t been too many incidents during the games.”There’s been a few yellow cards but nothing major,” Boyer said.In the CoRec league, No. 1 seed Thuggish and Messy beat No. 16 The Killer Kiwis by a score of 4-2. Thuggish and Messy’s opponent will be decided on Oct 21.No. 14 The Michael Jackson Tributes, beat No. 3 The Big Green 4-2. In the fraternity league No. 8 Phi Delta Theta held off No. 9 Sigma Chi 3-2.
