The United States Department of Agriculture has moved forward with several years worth of plans to shut down the Soil and Research Unit on the South end of campus.
The USDA has planned to shut the unit down since 2006, but has only recently been able to do so because of budget conflicts with the Louisiana legislature.
The unit, which studies soil and water samples that eventually drain in the Gulf of Mexico, is leased from the University and has employed numerous faculty and students over the past 20 years.
