The FBI and Department of Homeland Security released two bulletins Monday naming sports stadiums as emerging targets for terrorist groups, the Associated Press reported Tuesday. LSU police department spokesman Maj. Lawrence Rabalais confirmed he had received the bulletins and said the police department is taking “proactive measures” for football season.”We got the intelligence from the FBI, and we have plans in place to enhance security measures for the football games,” he said. “It would defeat the purpose of having security plans in place if we announce what those plans are.”Herb Vincent, LSU senior associate athletic director and associate vice chancellor for University Relations, said security during sporting events on campus is always of utmost importance.”It’s one of our main priorities at all athletic events,” Vincent said. “Now we do bag checks, and there are certain things such as backpacks that we don’t allow in the stadium. A lot of those things are already in place, but we’ll follow the advice of our security officials if we need to do anything else.”Vincent said the athletic department will further discuss heightening security at Tiger Stadium as LSU’s next home game Oct. 10 against Florida gets closer.—-Contact Rachel Whittaker at [email protected]
