Thursday night the parade grounds were roaring with the funky rock music by the Nashville based band, Space Capone.
The Student Activity Board decided to start off the year with a bang and throw a back to school bash. A stage was set up on the parade grounds and students gathered to listen to the alternative rock band.
“We really wanted to start the year off with something that would entertain the students and help to bring live music back to the campus,” said Daniel Smallwood, president of the Student Activity Board (SAB).
Cassandra Rideau, Vice President of public relations for SAB said they have a lot of other events planned for the year, including an outdoor movie next week and hopefully a LSU Idol competition, based on American Idol, later in the year.
This is the first year the University has had a live concert event at the parade grounds other than Groovin’ on the Grounds. Smallwood said SAB hopes to bring more music based events back to school.
“Music is fun and it appeals to many students,” Smallwood said.
They found the band last semester when students from SAB traveled to Nashville for a National Association for Campus Activities conference.
“We saw these guys and knew we had to have them perform at our school,” said Laura Dore, one of the students that attended the conference. “It was a really great show they put on with lots of energy.”
Dore said SAB thought the parade grounds would be the perfect venue for this event because students would be able to enjoy the music while playing football or tossing around a Frisbee.
Dore thought right.
The parade grounds were packed with students kicking around soccer balls and playing games of ultimate Frisbee all the while jamming to the band.
Smallwood said after hearing the band, they got their information and then contacted them over the summer and all of the final arrangements were made before students ever got back to school.
When planning events for this year, Rideau said they had to take into consideration the budget cuts. She said the band came to play at a very reasonable price.
