Former LSU soccer player Robyn DesOrmeaux died Thursday morning after battling a rare form of bone cancer for six years.
DesOrmeaux was the starting goal keeper for the Tigers from 2001-2004, starting 50 of the 58 games in which she played.
DesOrmeaux was the team’s all-time leader with 28 wins in her four-year career, according to a new release by LSU Athletics. She is also ranked as the No.3 goal keeper in the LSU history with 183 career saves and 13.5 career shutouts, the news release said.
Soccer coach Brian Lee said DesOrmeaux was an “inspiration.”
“She was an LSU Tiger through and through. Robyn has been an inspiration to us all through her courageous fight and her strength will endure forever,” Lee said. “We can all draw upon her example to live each day with 109 percent effort in whatever we do.”
At the end of Robyn DesOrmeaux’s eligibility at LSU, she was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer that is commonly found in the pelvis. Doctors said she would only have 10 percent chance to live.
After being diagnosed with cancer, DesOrmeaux fought the disease with 109 percent, combining her jersey number, 99, and the 10 percent chance of living.
Despite her health, DesOrmeaux graduated from LSU in 2006 with a degree in general studies.
Fans who wish to assist the DesOrmeaux family with medical bills and funeral expenses can donate to the Robyn DesOrmeaux Donations Trust Account at any Chase Bank location, the new release said.
