The Student Health Center is reporting more than 200 confirmed on-campus cases of Type A influenza since they began tracking them in May.
The Health Center confirmed about 10 cases during the summer and another 182 between Aug. 10 and Aug 26.
Julie Hupperich, associate director of the Health Center, said the numbers for confirmed cases since Wedesday were not available, but said she believed it was well over 200 by now.
Hupperich said the Health Center tracked at least 70 students with non-seasonal flu last week.
During the first stage of the outbreak, the Health Center said confirmed flu cases were mostly localized to sorority women. However, with the start of classes, Hupperich said they are now seeing cases across the board.
Hupperich said the number of cases the Health Center sees varies from day to day, but is mostly maintaining a constant level.
She said the Center for Disease Control and Prevention predicts the H1N1 season will overlap with the average flu season.
The CDC has pushed back the expected date for the availability of a H1N1 vaccine from November to December.
“We’re still not certain it will be readily available,” Hupperich said. “A lot of it is still up in the air about whether it will be available on campus.”
Hupperich said she predicts a difficult flu season ahead.
