BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Former Gov. Edwin Edwards appears to have lost his bid to get out of prison early.
As the final moments ticked away on the President George Bush’s term in office, Edwards was not on the list of last-minute sentence commutations.
Former Gov. Dave Treen, who had pushed heavily to get Edwards released from prison, says he was disappointed to see his efforts fail.
Edwards is serving a 10-year sentence for an extortion scheme that involved shaking down riverboat casino owners and license applicants. Edwards is scheduled for release in 2011 from the federal prison in Oakdale.
