The third season of the CW’s “Jane the Virgin” is in full swing, and it is by far the most emotional season yet.
STARS: 5/5
The series has come a long way from its original premise — a religious and abstinent young adult named Jane Villanueva is accidentally artificially inseminated by her gynecologist. And the baby daddy? Rafael, the son of the owner of the hotel Jane works at, with whom she once had a fling.
The show has since kept viewers enticed with its telenovela-type twists and turns. Whether it’s crime, mystery, romance, comedy or just some good old-fashioned family storylines, the show really does have something for everyone.
With the show in its third season, audiences have been able to see the characters and their relationships develop substantially.
Even Petra, Rafael’s ex-wife who was originally portrayed as manipulative, and, at times, downright evil, has proven to be caring and protective. Viewers are able to sympathize with her as her sensitive side is revealed and her insecurities come to light.
Petra and Jane have a particularly interesting dynamic. Both new mothers, the two struggle over differences in parenting styles.
Viewers see, however, that this conflict is merely a manifestation of the two’s insecurities about their own parenting — a concept not too hard to imagine, as mothers have been constantly criticized for their parenting choices.
However, the attachment to the characters, which has accumulated among audiences with time, gives the show’s writers the ability to take a toll on their viewers’ emotions.
This became clear after the death of one of the show’s main and most beloved characters early in the third season.
With this death, the show’s tone shifted into a much heavier one. Writers had the show’s next episode pick up three years later in order to soften the blow and focus on the characters’ recovery rather than the grief of the immediate aftermath.
Still, with the death of such a prominent character, the characters will still be dealing with the ensuing effects and trauma throughout the duration of the season.
Despite this tragedy, “Jane the Virgin” has not been short on comic relief. Fans can still look to the show as a relatively upbeat way to start their week.
The first two seasons of the series are available to stream on Netflix and the beginning of season three can be viewed on the CW’s website, with new episodes airing Mondays at 8 p.m.
