LSUPD arrested Frank Herrera Jr. Friday for the kidnapping and rape of a University student behind the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority house on the evening of March 15.
LSUPD spokesperson Lt. Kevin Scott announced the arrest outside the University Public Safety Building shortly before Herrera was transported to East Baton Rouge Parish Prison.
Scott said police responded to a kidnapping and sexual assault report on Government Street. He said a University student reported she was abducted after parking her car behind the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority house. After walking a short distance, the suspect forced her back into her vehicle, Scott said.
The male entered her vehicle and drove off campus where she was sexually assaulted, Scott said. When she was let out of the vehicle she sought help at the Jim Lu Food Mart on Government Street.
At 6:30 p.m. Friday night LSUPD arrested Herrera who will be booked on second degree kidnapping, second degree rape, armed robbery, possession of schedule I and possession of a firearm on school property.
“The entire LSU Police Department has worked tirelessly to ensure the apprehension of a suspect,” Scott said.
Scott said it was an isolated incident and that it seemed to be a crime of opportunity.
LSU President F. King Alexander sent out an email to the University community as the announcement was made.
“We are thankful to the LSU Police for acting quickly and conducting a swift, thorough investigation leading to today’s arrest. We also would like to thank the campus community for their support and assistance throughout the investigative process,” the email said.
