MTV is bringing back “My Super Sweet 16,” but with a twist. It’s now titled “My Super Sweet…” in an effort to be more inclusive.
Quinceañeras, debutante balls or any other milestone events are now included in the upgraded version. Word spread when Doron Ofir Casting sent an email encouraging the “most popular, outrageous, glitzy, girls and boys” to apply to have their parties aired on television.
Applicants can be as young as 13, and no maximum age is mentioned. The Doron Ofir Casting email said the cameras can capture the “most memorable moments of your life that’ll make all your Snapchat followers comment #goals when they see just how turnt your party gets.”
The network confirmed the return of the reality series, but details of a timeline have not yet been released, according to a report from Entertainment Weekly.
The reality show debuted in 2005. The final season aired in 2008, and several re-runs followed. The iconic series captured the attention of millions of teens and it’s back and ready for bigger and better parties.
Back in its prime, the reality show featured some of the most wealthy and ego-inflated teenagers. The viewers thrived on the full-blown temper tantrums and drama that enveloped the party planning process.
“My Super Sweet 16” resurfaced with a special episode in February 2015. The birthday celebration featured Lil Wayne’s daughter, Reginae Carter.
The series, with any luck, will still use the original theme song, “Sweet Sixteen” by Hilary Duff. However, because it no longer exclusively features 16th birthday parties, the song will undoubtedly be changed.
The series revival will most certainly drag in that nostalgic group of adults in their 20s. “My Super Sweet 16” created unachievable goals for birthdays since 2005. It’s sort of like the time “High School Musical” led you to believe that freshman through senior year would be magical and life-changing.
My 16th birthday started with my favorite breakfast and a trip to the DMV. It ended with cake and a shopping trip on the weekend of my choosing. While I had a great time, I realize that’s not everyone’s cup of tea.
Some need the celebration of the year, but I just needed an identification card stating I was free to drive on my own.
