The LSU Colorguard has been around since 1971, however, this year it is getting the opportunity to continue performing during the spring semester as a Winterguard team.
Winterguard is similar to Colorguard except all performances are indoors in gymnasiums and includes lyrical dancing, rifle and traditional flag choreography.
The theme of their show is based on the Andra Day song, “Rise Up.”
“For me it’s overcoming the flood that did devastate my home and my home town,” sophomore Winterguard member Laura Staub said. “No matter what happens, no matter how much water got in my friend’s houses, we are going to rebuild and we will rise up to the occasion.”
Alumni from more than 15 years ago have wanted to start up a Winterguard team, this is the first year they are finally able to do it.
“We finally got permission to do it so we had to go through the process of becoming a student organization and finding directors who can choreograph,” 2017 Colorguard Captain Erin Sampere said.
The team competed at Comeaux high school for their debut performance on February 4th, and won first place.
“Unfortunately in High School we didn’t have a team so being able to compete again is a magical experience,” Staub said.
The next stop will be their performance this weekend in Pensacola, Florida where they will compete against other independent teams across the nation.
