Senior infielder Cole Freeman feels that squad depth will not be an issue for the LSU baseball team this season.
The Tigers are boasting an experienced team, peppered with young talent. LSU has nine returning seniors and 13 signees. Freeman thinks this mesh of experience and raw talent will bode well for the Tigers.
“There are guys behind the starters that aren’t letting up,” Freeman said. “They aren’t saying, ‘You know what, it’s not my year. I’ll just wait for next year.’ They’re out here getting tips from the starters…you know, just trying to get better.”
LSU head coach Paul Mainieri labelled three roles on the team that are up for grabs: left field, the third starting pitcher, and back-up catcher. He specifically spoke about the pitching spot and narrowed the candidates down to freshman right-hander Zack Hess and another freshman right-hander, Eric Walker.
Mainieri stated he probably won’t make his final decision on the third pitching slot until about three weeks into the season.
The Tigers’ season is just around the corner and senior shortstop Kramer Robertson is liking what he’s seeing from the squad.
“I like where we’re at. We continue to get better everyday,” Robertson said. “Guys are starting to knock some of the rust off and get rhythm. We’re close. We’re almost where we want to be to start the season.”
LSU starts the baseball season on Friday, Feb. 17 against Air Force at home in Alex Box Stadium.
