“It Ain’t Me,” a recent release by electronic producer Kygo, features pop sensation Selena Gomez.
STARS: 4/5
The song, released Feb. 16, seems to be about Gomez’s ex-boyfriend Justin Bieber.
Kygo, known for his hit singles “Stay” and “Stole the Show,” released “It Ain’t Me” with the intentions of showcasing Selena’s soft voice in a song relatable to her past. Recently, she has been spotted out and about with her new beau The Weeknd.
“It Ain’t Me” is Gomez’s first release since May 2016 when she was featured in Charlie Puth’s “We Don’t Talk Anymore.”
It’s clear to listeners that “It Ain’t Me” is about a loving relationship that eventually led to a fallout.
The lyrics tell the story of two lovers who were infatuated with each other during the beginning of their relationship, but it eventually fizzled out. This leads to the breakup of Gomez and her significant other at the time, who is suspected to be Bieber.
“Somewhere along the lines we stopped seeing eye to eye,” Gomez sings. “You were staying out all night, and I had enough.”
She shows that she’s happy to have moved on from Bieber by singing, “Who’s waking up to drive you home when you’re drunk and all alone? Who’s gonna walk you through the dark side of the morning? It ain’t me.”
This song shows that Gomez is finally finding closure for her heartbreaking end with Bieber.
She hints that she plans to keep the good parts of the relationship by saying, “I’ll take with me the polaroids and the memories,” but harshly finishes the verse with, “But you know I’m gonna leave behind the worst of us.”
The lyrics explain her emotions in an understandable way, making the song an easy and delightful listening experience.
As far as sound goes, the chorus is almost too choppy and electronic, which makes it hard to understand the lyrics. Aside from that part of the song, the music blends perfectly with Gomez’s soft and beautiful voice.
“It Ain’t Me” shows that Gomez is over her ex for good and seems to be very happy with The Weeknd.
