The Chainsmokers are a unique blend of indie, dance and pop. Their sound has proven to be successful, given “Paris,” the group’s newest rank-climbing song.
STARS: 5/5
The No. 1 hit single “Closer” was the song of the summer and inspired many a party over the course of the fall 2016 semester. The song features Halsey’s vocals and tells the story of two ex-lovers rekindling something that used to be. It’s heartbreaking and relatable, which is probably why it broke records in the charts.
“Closer” held the No. 1 seat for more than 10 weeks, ultimately breaking Drake’s previous “One Dance” record, according to Billboard.
Lyrics such as “I know it breaks your heart” and “now you’re looking pretty in a hotel bar” can be applied to an array of relationships and people. The beat was bittersweet because everyone has someone they think about when that song plays on the radio or on shuffle from your library.
Although the lyrics can’t be taken too literally when applying the message to your own life, but the song is relatable nonetheless.
The Chainsmokers’ newest hit, “Paris” is steadily floating around the top charts. The rebellious and forbidden relationship is a story told time and time again, but the duo adds its own unique touches to the track.
“Standing there with a frown and a cigarette, posting pictures of yourself on the internet” are lyrics that testify to the fun of rebellion and straying away from the expected. Even for the average introvert, the idea of going crazy and living life for only your own benefit is exhilarating.
That’s not to say anyone should post scandalous pictures on the internet. Maybe take that line as a metaphor instead.
The Chainsmokers tweeted that “Paris” is “a sentimental yearning for a reality that isn’t genuine” or “an irrecoverable condition for fantasy that evokes nostalgia or daydreams.”
The Chainsmokers are on their Memories Tour and will appear at the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans on May 13.
The duo released their official debut single “#Selfie” in January 2014. The song proceeded to go viral and generated millions of views. Singles like “Kanye” and “Let You Go” quickly gained popularity soon afterward.
Top hits like “Roses,” “Don’t Let Me Down” and “All We Know” showcase the artists’ talents differently. While their success is still relatively new, I don’t see them slowing down in popularity anytime soon.
