Maroon 5’s “Cold” featuring Future was released Feb. 14, and it’s proving to be another hit.
STARS: 5/5
“Cold” is acting as a preview for Maroon 5’s sixth album. The music video made its debut on Feb. 15. The song’s tone is devastating yet uplifting.
That may be confusing, but the lyrics are a testament to anyone struggling with a relationship or breakup. The songs starts off with “cold enough to chill my bones.” Adam Levine is saying that his girl is cold and distant, and anyone who’s had an encounter with feelings knows they can get messy.
With the song’s upbeat tempo, I’d almost compare it to the way you try to live life despite the stinging pain and the cold.
Levine continues by singing, “with every breath you breathe, I see there’s something going on.” People can be difficult to read, especially when they’re growing in different directions. It’s an emotional downward spiral of a song.
Future was the perfect choice for the rap section of the song because he adds a slightly harsher tone. Levine sounds hurt, but not angry.
The music video is a compilation of trippy scenes and incredible editing. The video begins with Levine being told to check out Future’s verse for “Cold.” He reluctantly agrees to stop by, but his drink is immediately spiked, which makes for a really interesting party.
Levine makes his way through the suddenly very hazy party, watching as partygoers turn into various animal breeds.
Finally, Levine makes it home to his wife to recall the events from the night. Behati Prinsloo, Victoria’s Secret model and Levine’s actual wife, is featured in the video.
“I was like listen, I’ll only make a video that’s sexy if A., my wife’s on board with whatever we’re doing,” Levine said in an interview with Ellen DeGeneres. “And B., I have to go to a party reluctantly, and then I have to get drugged somehow. So that’s the video … Me getting drugged at a party and not knowing what someone slipped in my drink.”
Naturally, the audience has a different takeaway in the lyrical sense. That being said, the video elements get bonus points for creativity.
The beginning and end of the video are exceptionally ordinary, which probably makes the interesting shot sequence in the middle all the more appealing.
