The LSU baseball team defeated Air Force with a final score of 10-3. The Tigers had a clean sweep this opening weekend with their wins over Army and Air Force.
In the fourth inning of Sunday’s game, freshman Josh Smith and junior Greg Deichmann each hit home runs to give the Tigers a 6-2 lead over Air Force.
“There was a lot of great stuff about this weekend,” said LSU head coach Paul Mainieri. ”I’m a little exhausted to be honest with you at this point. But if every weekend went as smoothly and as well-planned as this weekend goes, I’ll be a happy man.”
Senior second baseman Cole Freeman believes that his final season at LSU is off to a great start.
“I really don’t think it could’ve gone better,” Freeman said. “The way we played was lights out. We got a little bit of everything. We got the big leads. We came back from deficits.”
Many freshman players experienced their first opening weekend as a Tiger in Alex Box Stadium this weekend, including third baseman Josh Smith.
“It was awesome. It was a dream come true for sure,” Smith said. ”You’ve got the best fans in the country. We just get to come out and experience what LSU is all about. It was a lot of fun. We had a lot of fun.”
The No. 2 Tigers start off the season 3-0. Next, they will play at New Orleans on Tuesday, Feb. 21.
