19-year-old Clementine Creevy, the front lady of Los Angeles garage-pop band Cherry Glazerr, has already made a name for herself in the LA music scene. “Apocalipstick,” produced by Joe Chiccarelli (White Stripes, The Strokes, The Shins), is the band’s second full length album and their first release on the Secretly Canadian label.
The band has come a long way since their debut album, “Haxel Princess,” on Burger Records, which dropped in 2014 while Creevy was still in high school. Since then, the band’s original lineup has changed, and their sound has transitioned from lo-fi to more robust. Creevy has also done some acting since then, starring as a musician in the Amazon original series “Transparent.”
The record’s subject matter is more serious, aside from lyrics about wearing the same underpants three days in a row or eating steak fajitas. The album covers themes of female solidarity, insecurity, social media narcissism, and doing what you want without worrying about judgment.
Three music videos accompany the singles released prior to the full length album. The opening song’s video, “Told You I’d Be with the Guys” features Cherry Glazerr crowded by dull men in red shirts as Creevy sings about finding solidarity among other women. “Nuclear Bomb” and “Nurse Ratched” also have accompanying, slightly graphic videos.
Cherry Glazerr has matured since 2014, yet they keep the music light by incorporating humor and coming-of-age antics. “Apocalipstick” sounds more like grunge and punk than “Haxel Princess.” It’s guitar-heavy, loud and energetic. If you want to catch this young, fiery band live, Cherry Glazerr’s current tour is scheduled to stop in New Orleans on March 22.
