Some LSU Greek Life activities have been reinstated, according to a document sent to Greek leaders by the Office of Greek Life. Greek Life activities were suspended Sept. 14, following the potential hazing-related death of Maxwell Gruver.
The following meetings, activities and events may resume Oct. 4:
- Chapter assessment workshops per the Greek Life Assessment Process
- On and off campus programs to include Founders’ Day events, scholarship events, educational programs and Panhellenic “down the row” events
- Chapter sisterhood/brotherhood retreats, excluding overnight retreats
- Prior to retreat, the chapter must submit a chapter retreat planning worksheet to chapter adviser approval and submitted to their respective Greek Life council adviser.
- New members can attend.
- Chapter advisers must be present for the entire retreat.
- Participation in alumni and parent events
- Interfraternity Council, National Pan-Hellenic Council and Panhellenic Council meetings and events to include delegates, executive boards and committees
- GBOD and GLI meetings and events
- Active chapter member study hours
- Recruiting, including informal and COB, may resume
Before continuing new member education programs, chapters must submit a new member education planning worksheet for chapter adviser approval and submitted to respective Greek Life council advisers.
Initiation dates previously submitted can remain and new dates may be submitted. Initiation must occur by Nov. 22 per Greek Life policies, according to the document.
New member education meetings and activities are to take place on campus, may not be conducted until 9 a.m. and must conclude by 8 p.m. each day, unless HQs require a different time frame. Documentation must be provided, according to the document.
A member of the Chapter Advisory Board must be present for all new member education meetings, activities and events.
Greek Life staff will be available to assist in completing, coaching, advising and answering questions in person on Oct. 5 and Oct. 6, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the office, according to the document.
The document stated chapter presidents, risk management social chairmen and advisers must attend a mandatory social event and risk management training presented by Greek Life. Representatives are invited to participate. Any class conflicts require documentation with an appropriate officer as a substitute. The dates are as follows:
- Oct. 10 at 5 p.m. in the LaFourche Room of the LSU Student Union for NPHC fraternities and sororities
- Oct. 11 at 5 p.m. in the Atchafalaya Room of the Student Union for PHC sororities
- Oct. 11 at 6 p.m. in the Atchafalaya Room of the Student Union for PHC and IFC to discuss co-sponsored events
- Oct. 11 at 7 p.m. in the Atchafalaya Room of the Student Union for IFC fraternities
Events with alcohol may be resumed on Oct. 12, including but not limited to bus trips; grubs; formals; semi formals; house parties; Founders’ days; alumni and parent events; and exchanges, according to the document. The events can take place after compliance with:
- Chapter attendance at the social event and risk management training on Oct. 10 or Oct. 11.
- Signature from all active and new members acknowledging their review of the Greek Life Risk Management Compliance Statement, located on the Greek Life website. The statements are due no later than Oct. 11.
Some events, meetings and activities will remain prohibited, according to the document. Any exceptions falling outside of the following parameters to respective council advisers. Those prohibited events, meetings and activities include:
- New member required “study hours” and “study groups”
- Overnight retreats
- New member on call/designated driver programs
- New member duties, including but not limited to chores and cleanups
Additionally, chapters are allowed to have events with alcohol at the house for the next home football game on Oct. 14, in which security requests are past due. Chapters are allowed to have events off campus and previously planned with alcohol. However, the events are only allowed after attendance at the risk management policy and social event training on Oct. 10 and Oct. 11 and full chapter membership acknowledgment of the Greek Life risk management compliance statement.
The updated tailgating procedures released on Sept. 21 will still be enforced.
Further, there is no University policy prohibiting student organization meetings and activities during the week of midterms.
