The national Lambda Chi Alpha organization announced it would be shutting down the LSU chapter in a statement released Wednesday.
“Based on the recent chapter history, the fraternity Board concluded that the chapter was unsafe and didn’t promote a healthy environment or one conducive to learning or personal development. The university supports the decision,” the national organization said in a statement.
“Under the terms of the closure, no individual may represent Lambda Chi Alpha or the Upsilon chapter in any manner on the Louisiana State University campus, including social events, intramurals, and the Inter-Fraternity Council.”
The chapter has been on probation since May 12, 2016, following an investigation into reported hazing. According to a letter from the Office of Advocacy and Accountability, the probation was set to be lifted May 31, 2019.
“By providing these restrictions, it is our hope that the fraternity will focus on building internal framework to break the cycle of hazing and to move forward as a strong role model at LSU,” the letter stated.
This ruling comes a month after the national Phi Delta Theta organization removed the LSU chapter from campus following the hazing death of Maxwell Gruver.
LSU Dean of Students Mari Fuentes-Martin directed The Daily Reveille to LSU Director of Greek Life Angela Guillory for comment. Guillory was unavailable upon three requests for comment.
