The talented, well-versed trio of California sisters Este, Danielle and Alana Haim that compose pop indie rock group HAIM released their newest album, “Something to Tell You,” July 7. The sisters delve deep into relationship heartaches and triumphs, as well as growing up on the road, and have perfected their niche sound as uplifting, feminine rock and roll.
The record opens with the catchy single “Want You Back.” This song really embodies what I like about HAIM’s music so much — their unique vocals and empowering ballads.
In an interview with NPR, guitarist and lead vocalist Danielle Haim said, “[This song is] more about me becoming more in touch with my own feelings. The whole record reflects the fact that we spent years on the road. Our band that once was only in our living room was now a global, very busy thing. With ‘Want You Back,’ both themes are prevalent. It’s definitely about self-reflection and growing up and realizing that there’s always two sides to the coin.”
The sisters excel at making music that’s relatable without being cliche.
Following “Want You Back,” “Nothing’s Wrong” is one of my favorite songs on the record. It reminds me of an ’80s-esque feel with a modern twist. The sisters sing of denial and tackling the difficulties of maintaining long-distance relationships, as they have been for years.
The second single, “Little of Your Love,” isn’t as strong as the first single they teased fans with, and is even borderline cheesy at points. One of the few complaints I have about HAIM is with their harmonious choruses, which can come off as too much at times.
“You Never Knew” is my favorite song off the album. This song sounds easily like something Fleetwood Mac would have performed back in the 70’s, and that’s probably why I enjoy it so much. HAIM’s sound remains infectious and warming to listen to, another reason why I’ve always kept them on my playlists.
“Something To Tell You,” “Found It In Silence” and “Ready for You” are some other notable songs on the album that further the album’s themes of maturity, emotional growth and love. HAIM has come a long way since their debut record, “Days Are Gone” dropped in 2013 and I’m happy to see them confident in the direction they’ve taken musically over the years.
They’re extremely talented, and while their songs may seem repetitive at times, “Something To Tell You” is classic HAIM at its finest — something longtime fans will appreciate.
