Freshman quarterback Myles Brennan’s skills were put to the test in a tight situation for the first time in last week’s game against Syracuse.
Although he has played in previous games, the freshman quarterback had not been tested under fire yet. Brennan completed 4 of 6 passes for 75 yards during his time leading the Tigers’ offense. Despite throwing an interception, head coach Ed Orgeron was pleased with Brennan’s performance.
“I thought he threw the ball very well,” Orgeron said. “Great release speed. He made some great decisions.”
Another Tiger who was impressed with how Brennan handled the pressure was junior center Will Clapp.
“I thought Myles did really well,” Clapp said. “He didn’t seem phased at all. He took control of the huddle. He did his job and showed that he’s ready.”
Being the backup to senior quarterback Danny Etling this season, Brennan has the ability to learn a lot about the position and its responsibilities from an experienced mentor. Etling does recognize that Brennan and other freshman players are important pieces of the team’s offense.
“I’ve been pretty proud of our guys and everyone stepping up, young guys even, to make plays and contribute to this offense,” Etling said.
Coach Orgeron knows the significance of having a solid second-string quarterback in case of an emergency. Because Etling is a senior, it is vital for Brennan to gain experience and a grasp on the offense this year since he most likely will be Etling’s successor.
“We’re putting Myles in to [eventually] take Danny’s spot,” Orgeron said. “We’re giving him reps in case he has to play.”
It will be interesting to see how many snaps Brennan can get under his belt before the brunt of LSU’s season with seven consecutive SEC matchups. The big question now is will we see more of Brennan in the Troy game since it is LSU’s last non-conference game of the season?
The Tigers will host Troy this Saturday, Sept. 30 for LSU’s homecoming game. Kickoff is at 6 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPNU.
