LSU routed Chattanooga in the Tigers’ home opener, but self-inflicted errors prevented the score from widening.
The Tigers committed 11 penalties for 74 yards, and missed two field goals.
“[I am] very concerned,” Orgeron said when asked about the job of his field goal kickers. “We can’t go for it all the time, and we need to get points. We need to get it fixed fast, and hopefully we can.”
Sophomore Jack Gonsoulin missed a 40-yard field goal wide right in the second quarter, and redshirt freshman Connor Culp didn’t get enough leg into a 47-yard field goal later in the second quarter.
So far on the season Gonsoulin and Culp are a combined 3-of-6 on field goal attempts.
Orgeron also addressed LSU’s high number of penalties in the past two games — 10 against BYU and 11 against Chattanooga.
“I do believe it is a mindset,” Orgeron said. “It’s got to come from me, and I am not putting up with it anymore.”
However, not all was bad for the Tigers Saturday night.
Senior quarterback Danny Etling was 8-14 for 227 yards and a touchdown. Etling completed five passes of 25-plus yards in the game, with a long of 48 yards to senior receiver D.J. Chark.
“[He was] very accurate,” Orgeron said. “He did a tremendous job early.”
Chark also contributed in the return game with a touchdown. Chark had another return for a touchdown called back due to a block in the back.
“He has great vision,” Orgeron said. “He’s a senior, the guy has played a lot of football, and he did punt return in high school. He’s just starting to learn how to do it [in college], and he is getting excited about it.”
It was the first time a Tiger returner had a touchdown called back, then return another punt for a touchdown in the same game since Odell Beckham Jr. did it against North Texas in 2012.
LSU’s defense also contributed to the Tigers win with five sacks and two interceptions.
The pass rush once again overwhelmed the opposing quarterback. Sixth-year senior outside linebacker Corey Thompson added to his sack total with 1 ½ sacks in the game. Freshman outside linebacker K’Lavon Chaisson came up with the first two sacks in his career also.
Redshirt freshman Greedy Williams came up with his second interception of the season, and freshman Kary Vincent had his first career interception after an acrobatic grab in the second quarter.
“Greedy is a tall corner with speed, which is hard to find,” Orgeron said. “I think Greedy is an outstanding young player for us right now.”
The Tiger defense will face a test next week when they head to Starkville to face off against Mississippi State and its quarterback Nick Fitzgerald. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Saturday night.
