LSU held its third and final full game scrimmage on Saturday with a focus on specific game situations.
Areas the team addressed in the scrimmage included goal line, red zone, two minute and overtime simulations with both sides running around 70 plays in total.
Orgeron said the offense came out looking sharp but struggled in third down situations throughout the scrimmage.
“The defense especially on third down beat the offense,” Orgeron said. “Our pass rush was superb today.”
The defense had seven recorded sacks on the day with freshman outside linebacker K’Lavon Chaisson continuing to impress the coaching staff. Chaisson is battling for playing time at the buck linebacker spot while junior Arden Key remains out.
Orgeron added that going up against offensive coordinator Matt Canada helps some of the younger linebackers on the team develop quicker.
“Going against Matt’s offense gives our linebackers an advantage,” Orgeron said. “There are shifts and motions every play, there’s resetting the defense and I think it tests their mental capacity to call the defense.”
The battles on the offensive line continue and at right guard in particular with freshmen Ed Ingram and Lloyd Cushenberry fighting for the spot. Orgeron believes Cushenberry has the upper hand for now due to him being available in the spring.
“Fantastic,” Orgeron said of the battle. “If we had to start somebody it would be Lloyd.”
Senior quarterback Danny Etling looked sharp for the Tigers going 13-22 for 168 yards along with three touchdowns and one interception. Freshman Myles Brennan went 10-20 for 122 yards on the day.
Junior running back Derrius Guice had a limited role in the scrimmage carrying the ball seven times for 48 yards with senior Darrel Williams receiving 17 carries for 60 yards.
The team will be back at practice Monday with preparations for the BYU game on September 2 expected to start on Tuesday.
