STARS: 5/5
Selena Gomez, Miley Cyrus and Demi Lovato have all released new songs, and it’s giving fans a flashback to the three stars’ Disney days.
The three women grew up in the eye of the public, and their careers continued to blossom once they retired from their Disney Channel characters.
Gomez, 25, stepped into the limelight in “Wizards of Waverly Place” in 2007. Her Disney career guided her to become the phenomenal pop performer she is today by putting her name on the map. Her newest single, “Fetish,” was released on July 13.
The instrumental is light and airy, as are Gomez’s vocals. The lyrics give a seductive vibe which is a common fallback for Gomez’s music, as evidence by her 2015 single “Good for You.”
“You got a fetish for my love,” Gomez says, “I push you out and you come right back,” are simple lyrics that can easily get stuck in one’s head. The song is definitely repetitive, but has a laid back feel.
Gomez isn’t the only former Disney star who has opted for a relaxed sound. Cyrus, 24, started the summer off with her fresh, romantic single, “Malibu,” and continued to release new music throughout the summer. She released her latest song “Younger Now,” on Aug. 18., which is also the title track to her new album, to be released on Sept. 29.
The song gives fans another taste of Cyrus’s undeniable talent. Her Tennessee roots shine through with her twangy vocals and stripped down instrumentals.
The lyrics, “Change is a thing you can count on,” alleviates the idea of things ever changing. The song is simple and inspiring. Her sincerity is heard not only through the lyrics, but by the emotions in her voice. Her music has always been honest and from the heart, and she’s continuing that style with “Younger Now.”
It seems Cyrus has finally given up her pop crown and gone back into her wholesome sound, unlike Lovato who is shining bright in the pop world. Her new single “Sorry Not Sorry” was released July 11.
“Being so bad got me feelin’ so good,” Lovato sings, “Showing you up like I knew that I would,” makes for the perfect lyrics to a song about delightful vengeance. Lovato belts her lyrics powerfully.
Ironically, with her new song being about coming out on top despite challenges, she has lived the meaning of her lyrics. The song isn’t about somebody as much as it is about not letting what people or the media say affect her career. Sonny With a Chance was Lovato’s start back in 2009, and almost 10 years later her career is sunnier than ever.
Music has found its way into Gomez, Cyrus and Lovato’s lives, and turned them into the performing sensations they are today because of their talent and ability to wow a crowd.
