The LSU women’s basketball team defeated the Arkansas Razorbacks 53-46 on Sunday afternoon at the PMAC.
With 3:41 left to play in the second quarter, the Lady Tigers trailed by 11 points. By halftime, the Lady Tigers fought back to only trail by two.
In the second half, it was the Lady Tigers defense that made the difference in the game. The team allowed only 18 points in the second half. Defense translated to offense for the Lady Tigers as they scored 23 points off of 22 forced turnovers.
“There was a buy-in today that we were not going to lose this game,” said LSU head coach Nikki Fargas.
The Lady Tigers’ offense was sparked by senior guard Jasmine Rhodes, who scored a season-high 13 points. Other bright spots in the LSU offense stemmed from junior guard Raigyne Moncrief, who recorded a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds, senior forward Alexis Hyder who scored 8 points, and senior guard Rina Hill, who contributed 9 points on the way to a Lady Tiger victory.
“Once we started to get our groove back, get some defensive stops, and hit shots on the other end—credit to Rina and Jasmine hitting shots for us—things started going our way,” said Moncrief.
This win takes the Lady Tigers to 15-6 overall and 4-4 in Southeastern Conference play. The Lady Tigers go on the road to face Tennessee in Knoxville on Feb. 2.
The Lady Razorbacks were 18-49 (36.7 percent) from the floor. However, it was the 22 turnovers that really hurt the Lady Razorbacks.
“We didn’t deserve to win the game today when you turn the ball over 22 times,” said Arkansas head coach Jimmy Dykes.
Even in the loss, the Lady Razorbacks saw a good performance from senior forward Jessica Jackson, who scored 15 points and secured eight rebounds before fouling out late in the game.
The Lady Razorbacks’ overall record falls to 13-8 and 2-6 in Southeastern Conference play. They will play the Lady Bulldogs of Georgia on Feb. 2 at home in Bud Walton Arena.
