The Theatre Department’s final production for the semester is a Carson Kreitzer play revealing the struggles of prostitutes beyond the cold-natured attitude of the American public. “Self Defense, or death of some salesmen” is the story of Jolene Palmer, a prostitute who is modeled after Aileen Wuornos, one of few known female serial killers.
Playwright Kreitzer alleges hypocrisy of the U.S. court system toward women. Just as women can be abused by their fathers and lovers, Kreitzer makes an argument that the court system can be worse.
“The character in question, [Palmer], is a very complex woman. She is a warm, complex, dangerous and damaged individual, who undoubtedly committed the crime for which she was accused,” said director Joanna Battles.Battles said the play makes the audience question their beliefs about prostitution and the legal system.
“The overall theme of the play is whether the court will be able to accept Palmer’s version of the story or simply blow her off because of her profession,” said Battles. The play is divided into seven acts and is 95 minutes long. The opening is tonight at 7:30, and it runs through March 28.
“This has been a huge year for the Swine Palace,” said Vastine Stabler, professional in residence in the Theatre Department and marketing director for the production.”The show is visually interesting with a modern theme and director that attacks the tough issues,” Stabler said.
