Louisiana’s health department says doctors have reported two new dangerous infections from the West Nile Virus in East Baton Rouge Parish over the past week.
The Department of Health and Hospitals says a case of flulike West Nile fever was reported in Ascension Parish.
The 12 cases so far this year include five “neuroinvasive” infections that can damage the brain or spinal cord, two of fever and five without symptoms.
East Baton Rouge now has seven cases, including three neuroinvasive and one of fever.
Ascension Parish has one neuroinvasive, one fever and two cases without symptoms. Red River Parish has one neuroinvasive case.
Most infections don’t cause any symptoms. They are diagnosed when people give blood or have blood checked for disease for another reason.
