Junior guard Skylar Mays doesn’t remember scoring his first points as an LSU Tigers, but he knows he was wearing the 72-10 Air Jordan 11s.
Tonight Mays became the 41st player in LSU history to reach 1000 points as the LSU basketball team defeated Texas A&M 66-55 Tuesday night.
“I’m happy to be in that club,” Mays said. “I just want to thank everybody who passed me the ball and go me open looks. I’m kind of speechless.
“It’s a sign of hard work paying off. It’s an honor to be a part of that club.”
Mays has started in 82 of the 91 games he’s played in since arriving at LSU in 2016. As a freshman, Mays became LSU’s starting point guard and averaged 8.3 points and 3.6 assists per game.
With the arrival of Tremont Waters in 2017, Mays moved off ball and became one of LSU’s best scorers. He upped his points per game average to 11.3 and shot over 44 percent from the field and 35 percent from three.
Mays has again elevated his game as a junior and helped LSU to a 22-5 record, which is on pace to the best in 10 years. He’s scoring 13.6 points a game and has led LSU in scoring in six games this season.
One of those games was a 14-point comeback in the final two minutes on the road against Missouri. Mays started the comeback by going on a 9-0 run in 33 seconds to cut the Missouri lead to five. LSU won 86-80 behind Mays’ career-high 24 points.
