The karaoke nights at Mellow Mushroom on Burbank Drive are no more due to a string of violent crimes in the area.
The restaurant decided to cancel karaoke Wednesdays after a number of incidents. A 22-year-old man was shot and killed at The Armstrong apartment complex at the beginning of the month, and on Monday night another shooting happened at the Taco Bell next door.
Gunfire broke out at Mellow Mushroom in the early morning of Jan. 17. As a mob of people fled the scene, a driver trying to leave was attacked by the group. The driver was beaten and the car sustained damages.
Baton Rouge Police Department arrested two individuals in connection with that shooting.
Jaylon Jackson, 20, and Jarius Wells, 20, were arrested on accounts of illegal possession of stolen firearms, resisting police and illegal use of dangerous weapons. Jackson and Wells both fled the scene of the accident and were found traveling north on Nicholson Drive, according to the BRPD arrest report.
In addition to the shootings, there have also been a rash of car break-ins at apartment complexes near LSU. On Jan. 4, 28 vehicles were burglarized overnight at Oakbrook Apartments, Wildwood Baton Rouge and Woodlands of Baton Rouge, according to WAFB.
Mellow Mushroom declined a request for comment.
