Rev Rank: 2/5
“Fantasy Island” ended up being not only a nightmare for the characters, but also for the audience as well.
Blumhouse’s new movie explores an island that brings your fantasy to life. The catch, however, is that they don’t always play out quite the way you want them to. In this supernatural horror, five people win a contest and are flown to this magical paradise.
The five people get to live out their deepest desires- getting revenge on a childhood bully, having it all, getting a do-over, and going to war. It’s during each of their fantasies that these guests discover something evil is living under the surface. However, like the resort’s manager said, you must complete its fantasy to its natural end.
Of course, the resort owner mentioned how most fantasies don’t unfold how you want them to, but how they should, which is exactly what happened. Following Blumhouse’s famous movie formula, “Fantasy Island” is filled with cheesy dialogue, jump scares, and a big plot twist.
Not only did it have zombies dripping black water from their eyes and hotel staff who would do anything to stay on the island, it also made Melanie (Lucy Hale) the one that called everyone there for revenge.
Everyone that was called to the island was somehow a part in the death of a guy she was supposed to go on a date with. They ended up all being a part of her fantasy of revenge but managed to get revenge on her instead through one last fantasy.
Everyone was finally able to go home and continue with their lives except for one. Brax (Jimmy O. Yang) is now tied to the island as a worker after sacrificing himself so his brother could live.
The movie tried to become people’s nightmare on film, but still fell short being more comedic than anything else. “Fantasy Island” finished out it’s natural end and relieved everyone from the nightmarish experience.
