Stars: 4.5/5
Uncut Gems is not only a unique film, but it also gives Adam Sandler a chance to show his diverse acting skills. This crime/mystery movie allows Adam Sandler to portray a dark and more serious role, and he did it flawlessly.
The action-packed film focuses on a Jewish jeweler who puts someone else’s money where his mouth is. This risky game he plays puts him in sticky situations that endanger him and his family, but, nonetheless, his goal is still set on the prize of winning.
The film itself is very active, and it never slows down. Never a dull moment in a movie is something I value. Another strength was the lack of predictions I had while watching.
I could never quite guess what was going to happen in each scene. The well-written storyline by Josh and Benny Safdie and Ronald Bronstein gave “Uncut Gems” a different and diverse story that is much needed in this current time of movie production.
However, what made this movie succeed most was the casting. The cast chosen for this movie is impeccable. Kevin Garnett, Lakeith Stanfield and everyone else in the film captivated their roles beyond well.
But, Adam Sandler…he took on the role so well that I was convinced he’s been a Jewish Jeweler all his life. I never expected Sandler to take on such a serious, grim role, but he did it perfectly. Everyone in the film really captured their roles in a way that made you forget they were actors.
The only negative thing I have to say is the lack of explanation of the rules of betting and the pawnshop. I got a little confused on what some of the terms meant; however, this does not apply to everyone. If you know the ins and outs of betting and the rules of selling to a pawn shop then you’re good to go. If you don’t, you’ll catch on, don’t worry.
“Uncut Gems” is a thrilling, action-packed movie. The movie turns over a new leaf for Adam Sandler, and I hope to see more serious films cast Sandler. The storyline, script and actors all contributed to the success of the movie. The only warning I’ll give is that the ending is not expected, and you will gasp.
