“Empire” is a tough act to follow on FOX, but the new drama “Star” holds its rightful spot in second place. The drama “Star” is directed by the same man who directs “Empire,” Lee Daniels. He has done a fantastic job directing and producing these shows. The drama that goes on within “Star” has a more realistic approach toward the audience. “Star” is the show to watch to realize you should work hard to achieve your dreams and never give up.
“Star” is centered around three girls who come from different backgrounds. Technically two backgrounds, but the sisters, Star and Simone, were separated by the system. The first season starts off with Star searching for her sister Simone and when she finds her, she was being raped by her foster dad. Star rescues her sister and they go on lam searching for their dead mother’s best friend Ms. Carlotta, played by Queen Latifah, to seek help. Also, they decide to start their music career with the help of a girl named Alexandra Crane, who plays the daughter of Roland Crane, a famous legendary rock star.
When all three girls are finally joined together, they work endless days and nights trying to jump off their music career. Between each other they experience betrayal and deceit, but outside forces like their love interests, managers and loved ones even find a way to stop their dream from being the biggest music group in Atlanta.
There are so many great guest stars who come on the show, including Tyrese Gibson, Keke Palmer and Gladys Knight. Amiyah Scott, who portrays Cotton, plays a big role in the show – she is very strong and inspiring. Cotton is transgender and the daughter of Ms. Carlotta, who has a hard time accepting Cotton for who she really wants to be.
Each girl faces their own personal struggle each season and each episode gets darker and more exciting than the last. The issues they face are very relatable to everyday problems within society. Star is almost like the leader of the group. She gets most of their gigs and she does anything she can to get to the top for the group – literally anything.
She has used her body and flirtatious ways to seduce most men into helping the group. In season two, she does get into a relationship with a wealthy football player named Hunter and he showered her with money and gifts, but she goes through a lot of domestic abuse with him. Simone is still fighting to stay out the foster system, because she is still not of age to be on her own, and she struggles with staying away from drugs. Alexandra is trying to work hard to make a name for herself and get from under her father’s shadow. She also had a secret abortion and has yet to tell anyone.
These are only small details, but in the entire two seasons, there is so much drama to see and so much coming up in season three starting March 28. The drama will be intensifying, and the viewers can expect secrets to come up and vengeance to be taken.
