LSU snapped a four year losing streak to Tulane on Wednesday night with a dominant 10-4 victory.
Freshman Nick Storz saw his first action as a Tiger in the circle and rust was a factor as Storz plunked the first two batters he faced with no outs.
A sacrifice bunt moved runners to second and third but Storz showed great resilience with a strikeout and groundout to shortstop to end the inning.
Storz was replaced by AJ Labas after one inning and it was a struggle for the freshman who surrendered the first runs of his collegiate career.
“It was great to see him get out on the mound,” LSU coach Paul Mainieri said. “I couldn’t believe he hit the first two batters he saw but he got through the inning. He’ll keep getting better every time he’s out there.”
After a three up, three down second inning, Labas allowed a no out double followed by a four pitch walk to put base runners at first and second with no outs.
A line drive double from Grant Witherspoon scored one run.
Labas was blasted for four runs in the third before a single out was recorded in the inning.
LSU tried to work a little two out magic in the bottom of the third after Watson and Duplantis reached base. Catcher Hunter Feduccia drew a walk to load the bases for first baseman Austin Bain. A third straight walk brought DH Beau Jordan to the plate with LSU trailing 4-1.
Jordan would pop out to center field and end the scoring threat. Leaving runners in scoring position has become a nasty habit for this LSU team and it continued on Wednesday.
LSU scraped together two more runs in the fourth to bring the score to 4-3. Catch of the day goes to Watson who ran nearly to the infield to make a blooper fly ball catch that deflated the Tulane offense.
“I’m really just calming myself down,” Watson said. “My approach changed a little bit. I’ve been seeing the ball a lot better.”
The Tigers look the lead with a fifth inning hitting clinic including six hits and five runs, taking the 8-4 advantage.
Labas was replaced in the fifth inning and finished with four runs allowed on six hits and two strikeouts.
Devin Fontenot and Matthew Beck did their job by each striking out the side in back-to-back innings.
LSU will travel to Nashville where they will play a weekend series against Vanderbilt starting Friday.
