On Thursday, Gov. John Bel Edwards announced the creation of a program which will allow college and university students the opportunity to experience governmental policy making in action.
The program, titled the Governor’s Fellows Program in Louisiana Government, will give students the opportunity to participate in the state’s governing process.
Fellows will be assigned to cabinet-level agencies, where they will observe how policies are developed and financed, and how the governor leads the state.
The Fellows will also participate in a weekly speaker series and go on field trips designed to expand the student’s understanding of Louisiana government and current affairs.
“Through the fellowship program, we will cultivate a new generation of leaders in Louisiana,” Edwards said. “I encourage all college-aged students with an interest in Louisiana and a desire to make a positive change in our state to apply. The fellows will bring insight and fresh perspectives to the work that will mold the future of our great state.”
The Fellows Program is open to all students attending a Louisiana public higher education institute and Louisiana residents attending out-of-state higher education institutions.
Fellows will recieve housing on LSU’s campus for their duration in the program, three credit hours through the LSU Public Administration Institute, and a stipend of up to $1,500.
The Govenor’s Fellows Program in Louisiana Government is a partnership between the Office of the Governor, Louisiana State University, Southern University and the Baton Rouge Area Foundation. The program will be entirely funded by the philanthropic contributions managed by the Baton Rouge Area Foundation.
The program’s application process will open on April 23, 2018 at noon and will be available at http://www.gov.louisiana.gov/fellows.
