The LSU offense ran dry Sunday afternoon against Ole Miss, leading to a 9-1 defeat in the SEC championship game.

It was a struggle for LSU starter Caleb Gilbert who surrendered nine hits and three runs in three innings before being replaced by Cam Sanders.

Sanders throwing the best ball of his LSU career, pitching seven scoreless innings in two games against the top ranked Florida Gators.

Sanders retired five in a row in his time, including striking out the side in the fifth. The junior allowed no runs in three innings of work and retired 25 of the 28 batters he faced in the tournament.

Offensively, LSU put up a run in the first thanks to doubles from Antoine Duplantis and Daniel Cabrera. The Tigers still trailed 3-1 after four innings and in need of some offense.

The Tigers put runners on first and third with no outs in the sixth with Ole Miss ace Ryan Rolison at the mound. Catcher Nick Coomes drew a walk to load the bases but back-to-back strikeouts would end the threat.

LSU was unable to capitalize with runners in scoring position, going 1-for-12 on the afternoon.

Ole Miss added four insurance runs in the seventh off of reliever Devin Fontenot to extend the lead to 5-1 and a two run homerun two batters later off of Trent Vietmeier made it 7-1.

LSU came in to the tournament as a bubble team to even make the postseason but erased any doubt with wins over Mississippi State, South Carolina, Arkansas and Florida.

The wins over Florida and Arkansas came on the same day, against the number one and two teams in RPI. LSU’s RPI skyrocketed to 33 in advance of the Ole Miss game.

Sophomore pitcher Todd Peterson had the highlight of the week after being called to pinch hit in a game against South Carolina.  LSU had a narrow 4-3 lead in the 11th inning with runners on first and third with two outs.

The sophomore doubled off the left field wall that brought home two runs and then saved the game in extra innings.

The Tigers will wait and see where they go with the selection coming Monday at noon on ESPNU.
