Stars: 4/5
Take a superhero Marvel movie, water it down, add some children and their evil parents and you’ve got Hulu’s original show “Marvel Runaways.” This show is not your typical Marvel-related action film. These six teenagers are reunited to stop their parents from possibly destroying the world, but they are all close friends because of their parents’ association with this “Pride” cult.
You must have some patience if you decide to watch this show. It does start off with a problem occurring and with some important details that have already affected each character internally. Through flashbacks the truth will slowly be revealed. Your questions will get answered as each episode goes by, so just give it time and be optimistic.
It’s really cool how each character is diverse and different. You could say the leader of this marvel pact, Alex, is the brains of every mission. He has no superpowers, but he is the glue that holds the group together and he is tech savvy. The muscle would have to be Chase, who has kickass bionic robot gloves, and Molly who has supernatural strength. Nico and Karolina also have supernatural skills that come from mysterious origins, but their parents caused them. Last there is Gert, and she can communicate with her parents’ dinosaur they created in their lab.
All their parents play a role in citizens mysteriously disappearing around Los Angeles. They have been using these people to steal their energy to resurrect a powerful man. His plan is too create something which will ultimately destroy the world.
The drama and love interests is also very intriguing. There are lies and betrayal between the parents because of “Pride.” They learn the truth behind why their loved ones have died in the past, including Nico’s sister mysterious “suicide” and Molly’s parents fire explosion “accident.” The teenagers love between each other is really cute. First, Nico and Alex finally date, but really Karolina has deep feelings for Nico. Gert is secretly crushing on Chase, but he really likes Karolina.
This show is based on the comic as well, which came out in 2003. At the end of the series all the teenagers actually runaway from their homes together in hope to clear their names in the eyes of the law. The ending makes sense because the title was weird because there were no actual “runaways” involved, but the audience is left on a huge cliffhanger. Give this show a chance and you will be left on the edge of your seat.
