Guard Tremont Waters continued to add to his great freshman campaign for the Tigers with a last second shot that will be talked about in Baton Rouge for a long time.
LSU (10-4,1-1 Southeastern Conference) notched its first SEC victory of the season over No.11 Texas A&M on the road.
It was a balanced scoring attack from LSU with three players scoring in double figures and Waters leading the way with 21 points.
Texas A&M was playing without three important pieces to their puzzle with Robert Williams, Admon Gilder and Duane Wilson all sitting out. Those three players combined for 33 points per game heading into Saturday afternoon’s matchup.
LSU got things going early with a 10-0 run out of the gate led by the intensity of Waters. Waters struggled shooting in the half scoring six points on 2-for-8 shooting.
It was apparent Waters was the last person A&M wanted with the ball, drawing multiple double teams in the first half and turning the rock over three times.
The Aggies proceeded to score 12 straight points while holding LSU to 0-for-7 during that stretch including a six and a half minute scoring drought.
LSU was able to settle in despite shooting 35 percent from the field for the first half, holding the Aggies to 31 percent shooting to take a 29-28 lead into the half.
DJ Hogg was the leading scorer for A&M at over 14 points per game. Hogg struggled in the first half with four points on 1-of-5 shooting after a three game absence due to a suspension.
A perfect 4-of-4 start to the second half by the Aggies led to a four point lead three minutes into the half.
The Tigers were up and down shooting from the field for the second half. After knocking down its first four shots of the half, LSU went on a 1-for-7 cold stretch allowing the Aggies to take a 48-43 lead.
Tied at 60 with 3:41 to go in the game, a block by senior forward Duop Reath gave LSU a transition opportunity to take the lead, but transfer Daryl Edwards fumbled the up-court pass out of bounds.
After four straight A&M points, sophomore guard Skylar Mays connected with a three ball to cut the lead to one with 1:45 to play. With the score 68-63, Waters hit a 30-foot bomb to make it a two point game with 12 seconds remaining.
Tyler Davis missed both free throws giving LSU a chance to tie or win the game with three seconds remaining.
With three seconds remaining, the game was put in Waters hands once more and the freshman delivered with another 30-foot three, propelling LSU to the victory.
LSU will next go to Arkansas on Wednesday to take on the Razorbacks at 8:00 p.m.
