It only takes one point to win a game. LSU gave up what could have been 20 of them.
LSU missed multiple opportunities to put points on the board against Notre Dame in the Citrus Bowl on Monday. The Tigers missed two field goals, missed two touchdown opportunities in the red zone, and dropped multiple passes.
“We played a full 60 minutes,” said LSU head coach Ed Orgeron. “Although we played very poorly.”
LSU was just inches from scoring when freshman fullback Tory Carter got quick feet and cost his team a five yard penalty. Coach O called in freshman kicker Connor Culp for a 22-yard field goal that went wide.
Junior kicker Jack Gonsoulin attempted the next field goal in the second quarter. The kick was wide yet again.
Needless to say the Tigers’ special teams did not bring their A-game to Orlando.
Coach Orgeron says another area his team needs to improve upon is being more dominant in the red zone.
“We get bogged down in the red zone,” Coach O said. “Something that we have to get better is the red zone offense.”
The Tigers’ next near-touchdown in the third quarter featured three consecutive carries from RB Derrius Guice. Each went short of the goal line.
Notre Dame defeated LSU 21-17.
Coach O says he is excited about the new additions to the team for next year. However he may be losing a key player in the process.
Derrius Guice may leave LSU to declare for the NFL Draft.
“Me and Coach O have to have a deep conversation about [the Draft] and see where it goes,” Guice said.
If Guice decides to leave LSU, he will have ended his career as the fifth player in LSU history to rush for more than 3,000 yards.
 If not, Coach O and his Tigers may be an offensive threat in the 2018 season.
